Fundación Despertar began its activities in the year 2000 and, since 2002, it has focused its work on the 31 rural schools that conform to the Departamento San Alberto. The Foundation’s main objective is to develop workshops that promote the personal development and empowerment of children from rural areas in such a way as to mitigate the adverse impact of their environment.
 
We work on developing qualities that favor healthy and creative responses, qualities such as sense of humor, curiosity, a sense of autonomy, critical thinking capacity, conscious self-esteem and a feeling of belonging.

Some of the workshops we have implemented so far have been: games, arts and crafts, movement and reading encouragement.
After several years of sustained work the reading workshop has become the center of our activities since it is the one that has had the most positive effect on the children and their families.

At this point, the Foundation’s library has some 900 children’s books and 70 games.
