2009.12 YUM Microcredit for Women in Kalimantan Cooperative request

Posted in: Project Needs Met

Microcredit for Women in Central Kalimantan Cooperative

Access to the formal credit market remains largely unobtainable to poor women in the Bukit Batu area.

YUM will now focus on the creation of a cooperative in order to conduct microcredit and savings. The cooperative will bridge an important gap in the credit market. Self-employment in the Bukit Batu area is high and local women are engaged in a number of different small-business activities. Local women have expressed a strong desire for the microcredit project to be resumed.

The YUM cooperative will offer short-term (26 week up to 52 week) group loans requiring weekly repayments. Interest will be charged at the competitive rate of 32.75%p.a and a commitment to saving will be required. Repayment will be collected at the client’s place of work or home by a field officer. Clients have the option of faster repayment if desired.
