Project title: Completion of the Albadi Social School

Location: Quartier 5, Town of SELE-INKISI (123km west from Kinshasa), Central Congo Province, the DRC

Nature of the project: Albadi is a place for orphans and vulnerable children; we apply for a grant to enable us to complete the rehabilitation and improvement works started in 2007.

Description of the problem: Many children are not getting any opportunity to go to school due to the lack of support. Moreover, some children who were abandoned for various reasons are sleeping in the open and are totally left to themselves. The Albadi school gives them free education, and a small group of them is accommodated in the school premises. The fact that the classrooms are not paved makes it for us difficult to keep the walls clean, and parasites are attacking the children's feet. As for the children who are living in the school, pneumonia and upkeep of the bedding are a problem.

Specific objectives of the project:

To complete the construction works by:

• Walls covering: roughcasting of outer and inner walls of the 7 classrooms + office and passage.
• Floors covering: 2 cm thick smoothed concrete covering of the 7 classrooms, office, and passage.
• Latex paint on all the inner and outer walls. • Electricity: connection to the electricity distribution network, equipment, electrical box and accessories.
• A metal cistern on legs.

Notes:

• Whatever is not included in the present cost estimate is our own contribution to the project.
• The cistern is to keep rainwater and supply the toilets and washroom; its capacity is enough to last till the beginning of the new rainfall season.
• Due to the lack of floor covering and in spite of daily sprayings with water, children get dirty rather fast and are annoyed by fleas that attack their feet.
