4. Description of project or activity:

Training local groups of women to:
  1. self-building of solar cookers made from locally available materials (unit cost less than €1.50).
  2. growing moringa oleifera for food, reforestation and redeveloping marginal lands.(this tree when planted by seeds will grow vertical tubular roots with tendrils that stabilize the soil and fight erosion; its fruits have a high nutritious value as they contain 2 times more proteins than milk and 30% fat. 1 year after sowing, a tree reaches a 4 m height and can produce up to 3 kg fruits 2 times a year for 15 years; fruits, young leaves and stems, and flowers can be eaten. MO has also medical properties and water cleaning uses).
5. Who will benefit of this project/activity?
The most destitute people of the following regions of Madagascar: Toamasina- Tamatave (east), Mahajanga-Majunga (west) and Antsiranana-Diego Suarez (north)

6. What is their current situation?
A great distress caused by an important desertification.

How will this activity bring changes to their lives? A healthy and abundant food, agricultural development, slowing deforestation.
Did the beneficiaries request those services? Direct beneficiaries: rarely; but after being informed of their financial accessibility and simplicity of cultivation, they ask a second helping!
National, regional and local authorities: yes What is their participation to make this activity successful? Our motto is let's make them do it and not let's make it for them; we go there as technicians, managers and long term followers.
Self-sufficiency and partnership:
and aid:

Yes, Charity
No

What are you trying to do, and how long will it take? Nutrition and reforestation by and for destitute populations; final transmission should take place in 2013.
What is your strategy to reach these Objectives? Training regional and local female coordinators who are in touch with the beneficiaries in order to create, shape and strengthen independent local actions.

7. How will you know if you have reached your objectives?

Random visits, aimed and unexpected to be able to observe the use of solar cookers, the setting up of tree farms of Moringa Oleifera, the growing of this plant in plain earth and its use for food.

8. Which risks would compromise the success of this activity?

The lack of financing (salaries of the co-ordination team, transportation, etc.....) Politicking manoeuvres and corruption.

9. Non-financial existing resources:

a. Who will do the work? The co-ordination team.
Are they volunteers or do they get a salary? For the moment, they are volunteers.
Please name the main team and its professional experience: Mr Zoy and Mrs Nirina.
Is there an accountant on the site? No
b. Which other non-financial support is currently available? Storage places, tools, volunteers
Will they be available for the whole activity duration? Yes, because everything is based on mutual help and volunteering induced by the Malagasy as well as the Western people's growing awareness of the seriousness of the situation; we are working much on this relational aspect, essential when one has got no money in one of the poorest countries of the planet (the cancellation of the international debt did really change nothing at the level of the poor people)
c. Which support are you getting from the local community? An active partnership.
10. What are your current financial resources?
a. Which organization or person (including the SD organizations), to which purpose? cf page 11 of report and details through olivier@sunforlife.org
b. Did you make requests to other agencies that did not yet answer? We often send appeals through e-mailing, but with poor results.
c. Is the support you get continual (if applicable)? No.
11. What is the total amount you are requesting from the SD organizations in this form? € 7529.
12. How will this activity go on when the grants cease? Naturally, the plantations will be there, the use of solar cookers established, the nutritious values known and adopted.
13. Are you already co-operating with a SD national organization? If yes, which one? SD Britain. SDIA Sun for Life Grant Request - 2008 Page 5
What is the total amount received in the past, and for which activities? Always for this same food and reforestation activity, from memory, € 1,500.
Who is/was your liaison in this SD organization? Laura Lesley
14. Will this grant be received by a moral person? Yes, by SUN for LIFE
Will a piece of land be developed and is it owned by this moral person? I cannot understand that question; as we are working in the different communes (municipalities) of the regions named earlier, it would be useless to think about purchasing land to grow the M.O. when there are wide areas available through the Regions, the army, the penitentiary camps, the women's NGOs and individuals.
15. Are you authorized by your government to receive overseas funds?
The amount should be credited to a Sun for Life account a) in Switzerland or b) in France
