ICDP Peru Request

The International Program for Childhood Development, ICDP, is a nongovernmental organization founded in 1992 by a group of psychologists in Oslo, led by Karsten Hundeide—with the intention of working for children and youth in the world. It is aimed at children‘s caregivers, and was endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1993.

ICDP is a psychosocial intervention program that has been designed to enrich the understanding of caregivers about the children, promoting the value of their role as social agents, improving the relationships between children and adults, and revive traditional and positive practices regarding the child care. All with the ultimate aim of strengthening the complete child development.

Since 1993 ICDP has successfully developed its program in a variety of countries such as Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Britain, Bosnia, Macedonia, Russia, Ukraine, Kirgyzstan, Angola, Mozambique, Malawi, South Africa, Ethiopia, Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, India, Indonesia and Australia and has received support from UNICEF to develop projects in several South American countries like Colombia, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mozambique, Bosnia and Macedonia.

Peru has developed a pilot project with the  Kallpa-Cusco Assosiation, beginning the experience in March of this year, training people who work with families in Sangarará, successfully completing the training.

ICDP can be considered as a prevention program, while promoting a healthy relationship between children and caregivers to facilitate their development

ICDP program methodology is based on the idea that the best way of helping children is by helping their parents, teachers and/or caregivers. The most feasible strategy to help children, is by training people who have constant contact with families and children so they can incorporate the program in its activities, promoting quality care, prevention and respect for the children’s right.

ICDP OBJECTIVE

  • Positively influence in the experience of teachers / caregivers about the children, so that they can identify with the child and feel her emotional state by adjusting their care actions and initiatives to the child’s needs.
  • Strengthen self-confidence in the teacher / caregiver making them aware of the importance of their role in current and future children’s life.
  • Promoting a sensitive and emotionally expressive communication between caregiver and child can lead to a positive emotional development between the tow.
  • Promote enriching and stimulating interactions between caregiver and child to expand and guide the child’s experience and actions in relation to the surrounding world.
  • Reviving local practices of education, including “children’s play culture“, theater, music and cooperative activities.
