Large scale deforestation due to forestry activities since the 1980s has
eroded the thin layer of top soil and led to impoverished sandy soil in
YUM’s working area of Bukit Batu. The communities, due to their lack of
necessary knowledge to address this problem, have great difficulty
producing fresh food and therefore have to purchase it at high costs.

To address these problems, the aim of this project is to improve the
nutritional situation of the target group in 7 villages of Central
Kalimantan through the promotion of home gardens for the self‐provision
of the family, improvement in the quality of the soil, primarily using
organic practices, and promotion of small-animal husbandry.

"…a more informed and compassionate approach to death
and dying."

Death should be held
with the same reverence as we give to birth.
Unless we act and become informed, we will lose the skills to cope with
it and will find this extraordinary process of death swept under the
carpet completely. Living Well, Dying Well works to educate the general public, health professionals, and lay people, and it trains volunteers as "Doulas" to be companions and councilors for the dying.
Its four intervention areas are training, health, drinking water supply and sanitation, and reforestation for fighting global warming. CEDERI Madimba wants not only to organise but also to train leaders for self-education. This training is provided through sessions at the Headquarters in Madimba.
Benita and Silverio Gavilán live in the verdant dormitory town of Fernando de la Mora, just outside Asunción. From here they have been implementing child-centred projects since 1997. Just a few kilometres from their home lies Asunción’s Gross Market (Mercado de Abasto) where the Gaviláns’ project, the Vida Plena Foundation, runs a day centre for children between the ages of 3 and 14 whose parents are absent – either working abroad or at work all day. The children are often from single-parent families, and many are looked after by grandparents or other relatives. In the daytime, when they are not at school, which is either in the morning or in the afternoon, these children have nowhere to go.
